Witness is an organization that uses film as a means for social justice and change. They have a good amount of film on many causes throughout the world. One extremely moving is called "Hear Us" which calls us to stand with the women from Zimbabwe against sexual violence. Their website is http://www.witness.org.
Another group that is doing great work against human trafficking here in Birmingham is called Rescue and Restore Alabama. Take a trip to probation services with Sara Jana Camacho and Laura Mitchell who have spearheaded this non-profit coalition and you will see the need for laws and support services for victims of human trafficking. This coalition is a movement to not only give solace and voices to these victims, but also to reform our laws and inform our community around us.
A conversation about drafting a new state law against Human Trafficking will be held on Monday, August 31th at 6:00 p.m. in Samford University's Friendship Room at the Law Library. Jessica Jones, a recent law school graduate and lawyer with the Bradley Arant firm in Birmingham, will be presenting her research on the call for state legislation against human trafficking in Alabama.
